You can start with the 3 to 4 hour Introduction to Sailing / Boating Course where you will learn safety, leaving and returning to the dock. The rest of the time we will be out sailing and you can get a feel for what it is like to sail or just practice up on your long forgotten skills. This is an entry-level, non-liveaboard course in the series of Sail Canada courses on sailing keelboats and on cruising. Two full days on the water learning the basics. Good for individuals with minimal practical on-water experience. This entry-level course builds basic sailing skills with a focus on the operation of the vessel as crew. Candidates completing this course will be able to competently contribute as crew to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. This standard is recommended for individuals with little boating or sailing experience who want to experience sailing on a keelboat and begin to develop basic sailing skills in a relaxed environment at a comfortable pace. Prerequisite for the Basic Cruising Standard (Day Skipper): Good for experienced Sailors if there is a particular skill you want to work on, Safety, Docking, Casting Off, and Points of Sail. No Exam.

3 full days on the water (Non-Liveaboard). One week apart or three days in a row. To be able to cruise safely in local waters as both skipper and crew in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. This course is designed for the novice sailor and those with little experience on cruising sailboats in tidal waters. It can be a weekend or a weekday. Dates can vary from what is posted depending on the number of people signed up. A PCOC card is included for a small fee if needed. Prerequisite: must have the Competent Crew or equivalent years of experience. Good for experienced Sailors if there are particular skills you want to work on, all aspects of basic sailing. Must have before Intermediate Cruising.

5 full days and 4 nights liveaboard on the water, cruising the Southern Gulf Islands. With the ultimate goal of being able to cruise safely in local waters as both skipper and crew in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. It is a liveaboard course. This course is designed for the novice sailor and those with experience on cruising sailboats in tidal waters. It is for two or more students.. The price is per person. Food is supplied and agreed upon before. The cost of food is split between everyone. A prerequisite is a PCOC Card, but it can be included for a small fee.

This is on a 9 to 12 meter vessel in moderate wind and sea conditions, by day. This course is designed for the sailor with experience on cruising sailboats. It is for two students but could be three if you all know each other. The price is per person. Food can be supplied. Prerequisite: Basic Cruising Standard, Marine Radio ROC-M (DSC) Basic Navigation Standard

ROC stands for Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate and is required by anyone using a marine VHF or MF-HF radio (each person on the boat who will use the radio needs their own card). In addition, if you received your ROC card before the new Digital Selective Calling was introduced, you are encouraged to rewrite and get your DSC endorsement for your ROC-M card. Sign up and get the book; about three weeks later, we'll run the in-class review and test. If you want the e-pub version of the book, let us know. There is a $50 fee for missing or rebooking within two weeks of the class.

9 day Sailing get together for Starlight Sailing Students and crew. Bring your boat or prearrange to come with someone you know. We will leave Sooke with the current on the 13th of June and return by the 20th. We will be sailing, anchoring, hiking, visiting remote Islands, joining in Sailstice Festivities and just generally having fun on our boats. You are expected to have charts for the area, GPS, depth sounder and all Transport Canada required equipment onboard. PFD will be worn at all times while the boat is moving or you are in a dinghy.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card? All motorized boat operators in Canada are required by law to have a Proof of Competency and the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (more commonly known as a boating license and PCOC) is that, regardless of age, length of boat or engine horsepower. Sign up here, get the book when you are done studying you can set up an appointment to write the exam. There you have it a lifetime certification.
