General Information

Welcome to Starlight Sailing Adventures We are here to introduce you to basic sailing skills and the Cruising / Live Aboard Lifestyle in Sailboats. You can do day classes and practice sails. Three day condensed courses or come and Cruise for a 5 day trip and leave with your Basic Cruising Certificate, PCOC and VHF Marine Radio if you want. You sign up in advance and get the material to home study. Then we go sailing and learn the on the water skills and practice the theory. At the end you write the appropriate Sail Canada or Transport Canada exam and there you go. You’re certified, you’ve learned a skill and have had a vacation.

1a) Introduction to Sailing / Boating

You can start with the 3 to 4 hour Introduction to Sailing / Boating Course where you will learn safety, leaving and returning to the dock. The rest of the time we will be out sailing and you can get a feel for what it is like to sail or just practice up on your long forgotten skills. Start your Sail Canada Accreditation now with this class. Returning for practice sails is at a reduced rate. So come often!

2 ) Start Keelboat Sailing

This is one of the entry levels in the series of Sail Canada courses on sailing keelboats and on cruising, Good for individuals with minimal practical on water experience. This entry level course builds basic sailing skills with a focus on operation of the vessel as crew. Candidates completing this course will be able to competently contribute as crew to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. This standard is recommended for those with little boating or sailing experience that want to experience sailing on a keelboat and begin to build basic sailing skills in a relaxed environment and at a comfortable pace. Three half days on the water learning the basics.

3a ) Basic Cruising Standard 3 full days on the water

3 full days on the water one week apart. Can be three in a row of three days one week apart. To be able to cruise safely in local waters as both skipper and crew in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. This course is designed for the novice sailor and those with little experience on cruising sailboats in tidal waters. Can be weekend or week day. Dates can vary from what is posted depending on number of people signed up. PCOC Card included for a small fee if needed.

4a ) Cruise and Learn Keelboat

5 full days and 4 nights on the water cruising the Southern Gulf Islands. With the ultimate goal of being able to cruise safely in local waters as both skipper and crew in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. This course is designed for the novice sailor and those with little experience on cruising sailboats in tidal waters. It is for two students but could be three if you all know each other. The price is per person. Food can be supplied. Prerequisite is a PCOC Card but can be done at the same time.

5 ) Marine Radio ROC-M (DSC)

ROC stands for Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate and is required by anyone using a marine VHF radio or other marine radios (each person on the boat who will use the radio needs their own card). In addition, if you received your ROC card before the new Digital Selective Calling was introduced you are encouraged to return and get your DSC endorsement for your ROC-M card. Sign up and get the Book and CD then about three weeks later we'll run the review and test.

6 ) PCOC Pleasure Craft Operator Card

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card? All motorized boat operators in Canada are required by law to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (more commonly known as a boating license), regardless of age, length of boat or engine horsepower. Sign up here, get the book when you are done studying you can set up an appointment to write the exam. There you have it a lifetime certification.

7 ) Basic/Intermediate Coastal Navigation

The course consists of reading assignments in the text and notebook followed by exercises to be completed. The answers to the exercises are included so that you may verify your work immediately. When all exercises are completed the exams will be mailed to Starlight Sailing Adventures in Sooke for you to write. Time Required: There is no time limit on completing the course. Most students indicate that it is taking approximately 40 hours.
